It gets another LDS HC experience that we may want down the line when BYU football needs a new HC.

If Kalani can’t find a suitable replacement that is on Kalani. Coordinators don’t have to be LDS and BYU has P4 money. Plenty of high quality defensive coaches to choose from.

Kalani being a defensive guy who comes from the Whittingham tree should know plenty of other DCs that can step in and want p4 coordinator money.

Either Kalani is a great HC who aspiring great coaches want to work for or he isn’t. If the latter is true then he won’t survive as HC and we will be glad Jay Hill got higher level HC experience to make him a viable option in the future for HC.
