rather than BYU, BYUI, UVU, etc. He knows if he could increase the percentage of LDS students it would help to mitigate the party school perception that is ASU.
I have 2 sons who are ASU grads, one also a grad from the ASU law school, but they lived off campus and never really got involved in attending games. It's just where they went to school. Most LDS kids at ASU I think are similar--they go to school there, and attend the institute, but not much else.
My experience is that 20+ years ago the experience was much better at ASU games. There was a lot of friendly banter between ASU and BYU fans, especially between church members. But I think what is described in this post is a relatively new thing. Keep in mind that ASU has been pretty bad now for quite a few years. This is the first year in a long time they've been decent. Dillingham is a good coach, but I wonder how much he contributes to the culture that encourages or allows the kind of behavior being described.
