but it depends a little on your preferences for the trip. Tours can be great for hitting a lot of sites and staying very busy and active. Planning your own itinerary is easier than ever with so many great resources online. Assuming you have around 10 days, which seems to be pretty typical for many people, I would do three days in London, three days in Paris and three days in one other city or area. Italy is amazing but I always feel like it deserves its own trip. So for a first-timer, I always recommend starting with London and Paris. For your third city I would choose between Munich, Barcelona and Vienna. There are great flights from Munich and Barcelona back to the states while Vienna is more limited. If you want to stay on the direct to SLC route, you could also end in Amsterdam and fly home from there. Personally, Barcelona is my favorite city in Europe and I would move there tomorrow if I could.
