Live on the east coast. Talked to many youth who have gone out to Utah and taken the tour and left underwhelmed by the tour compared to other tours they have taken.

I can't compare with my own kid since he didn't apply to BYU but the tours he did take were very good. Tours of different dorm options, food options, library, student life activities, took them in to a few different types of classrooms.

Different students would be waiting at each place to guide them through that area then turn them back over to the tour guides.

So if it is just a drive around campus that would explain why it is underwhelming
