Two simple things would help immensely:
1. Require all medical services to list ALL prices and make patients aware of those prices BEFORE the appointment, so when possible the patient can price shop.

2. Require all billing to be sent less than 30 days after the appointment/procedure. There is absolutely no reason why they wait months and months to send bills. Their processes need to be improved. Legislate it at this point. If you can't send the bill in less than 30 days, you don't get to send it.

The government should not legislate how those two things are accomplished, just tell medical providers to do it. Give them time to figure it out, but it has to be done if we're ever going to make progress toward better healthcare that is more affordable. I understand better than most the complexities involved here, but it still needs to be done.
