rough year for me as I was going through a divorce after a marriage of 20 years went south. At that time my five children were 20,18,13,12 and 10 so your point could very well apply. However my children while able to hang out with friends and spend a few hours on the playstation or x box, the smart phone aspect of life was still more functional than entertaining. They spent most of their time outdoors. If it wasn't playing football they would be doing things with friends that would either end in victory of whatever crazy challenge they were going for, or injury.
When indoors we would have family time and there was also quiet time when they were not out with friends which meant reading quietly or doing puzzles; just chilling. Sure the texting became a thing as my older boys became teens and started flirting with the girls, but tech never became the all consuming aspect of their non working lives. Ironically 3 of my 4 boys are became techies and so they work in the IT industry in various capacities and all 4 of them as adults hang out with each other virtually via gaming. Their sister is more like me in that she is more interested in working with her hands. So she has drifted further into the world of food.
