Your priorities will determine which areas to look at. There are many beautiful areas of the country each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
As others have stated Algarve region has great golfing and is a go to vacation destination for locals as well as many foreigners. I prefer Carvoeiro over many of the other towns in the area. Faro is mainly expats now and 5 start resorts. It also contains the most golf courses.
The big cities each have their pros/cons.
Cascais is a nice part of Lisbon.
The upper Douro river valley (Peso de Régua) is similar Napa Valley, CA.
I would love to have a home in Portugal when the time comes, either near the temple or anywhere within a 2 hour drive of the temple. My overall preference would be to live on Madeira. It is absolutely stunning there. It is only a short flight away from Lisbon or Porto.
