1) unlike before we are in a power conference not on the outside
2) unlike before, the playoff will take 12 teams
So here's a scenario. BYU with two close losses, one coming against an undefeated Iowa St in the conference champ game. P4 conference champs plus Boise St go. That leaves 7 spots. They take the runner up from every P4. That leaves 3. They give 2 more to the SEC and one more to the big 10. Final tally:
4 SEC
3 Big10
2 ACC
2 Big12
Boise St
SEC still gets more than everyone. The 5th place SEC team and the 4th place big10 team are likely going to have a lot more regular season losses than BYU's one. BYU gets in. How many times has BYU 1) had the resume I'm proposing in the scenario above and 2) had this many available spots? This is not the old BCS system, or even the old playoff system.
