Grandpa was 1st in the continental U.S. to learn Pearl Harbor had been bombed.
He was a cryptography warrant officer for the U.S. Army on active duty at the Presidio in San Francisco on December 7, 1941, when the first wire transmission was sent from Hawaii to the continental U.S. informing that Pearl Harbor was being bombed by the Japanese. He decoded the message and delivered it to the commanding officer at the Presidio.
