You can't effectively land a booster of that size. You would have to give the
booster huge, strong, very heavy landing legs or something of the sort, and reengineer the rocket design to accomodate the leg weight and forces added. Doing the "tower catch" means you can design a booster that is mechanically simpler and much lighter. At this time, the Falcon 9 boosters might represent the upper limit of how big you can build a booster that carries its own landing equipment.
