Great age to start. Just rent until they can play a full size cello. I think cello sizes scale up in 8ths so you can
start them on a 1/8 or 1/4 size cello.
All my kids started on the violin in elementary school and all have stuck with it except one (he thinks music is dumb but he’s dumb and will only participate if there’s sweat and pain). My kids have all played sports in addition to middle school and high school orchestra. Sometimes orchestra interferes with sports and in that case, sports have always comes first.
