I think it’s become clear the way Kalani is steering the program is being very
hands off for football like Lavell was, and being a guiding mentor, leader and public face of the program and university, like Lavell was. I think what we saw previously was a very Ed Lamb type team, and what we’re seeing now is a very Jay Hill type team.

Kalani’s first staff had almost no experience, except Lamb. He made a ton of sense as an assistant to hire and Lean on heavily. There may have been things fans like you hated, but it also wasn’t nearly as bad as some exaggerate and make it seem. They won games. Beat Utah. Got some nice national rankings and started putting more guys in the NFL than BYU had done previously.

That’s probably about as high as they could go with that past staff. The 2022 season proved it wasn’t going to work anymore and it was time to move on, and move on they did.

Jay Hill is obviously the difference maker, and Kalani chose him to come to BYU. With more money and Big 12 status there’s no reason to think BYU won’t be able to bring in quality assistants should the need arise.

I think there is a lot of evidence to show he’s hands off and lets the assistants coach, and he’s obviously the one who brings in the assistants, which means he is now steering the program in a way that is leading to more wins.

Not to mention he’s advocated for and received more staff, consultants, money and resources from the administration and those all seem to be paying dividends.

There is more to being a head coach, especially at BYU. The good things he’s still bringing to the program outweigh the fact that he didn’t fire Tuiaki as soon as you wanted him to.
