Personally, I think it’s a line in the sand.
In 2010, what became the power conferences proposed $2,000 stipend, for athletes, on top of the cost of a scholarship.

A majority of the 350 Dividion 1 members were opposed, including all the non-football schools.

The consequence was that the P5 demanded autonomy.

The $2,000 proposal was their line in the sand.

Speaking for the other P5s, Bowlsby (Big 12 commissioner) stated that the aims, vision, and objectives of the P5 were so different than the rest and that they (P5) should be free to operate without having seek permission from the rest. He added that the financial viability of the others was not their responsibility.

Some are concerned that if the Big Ten and SEC don’t get what they want, they will opt out of a new CFP deal and, along with their media partners, create their own version.

That would eventually lead to poaching the ACC and Big 12 to increase inventory for such a move.

I don’t know how realistic that scenario is but as I recall there were some who were not concerned about consequences of rejecting the $2,000 increase proposal, in 2010. They didn’t believe anything would come of it.

We know how that turned out.
