I played in an overly serious 35+ baseball league across the Puget Sound area

For that age level, very good talent, loaded with former college guys and one or two minor leaguers per team.

We had Alex Gordon join our team. No, not THAT Alex Gordon, but another minor league Alex Gordon (https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=gordon002ale   ) right at his 35th birthday.  He was an outfielder, not a pitcher, and he'd been out of baseball for years, but he could hit 94 and had really good control.

His first game in the league? He struck out 23 batters. The other team was just laughing because they'd miss his offspeed stuff by feet.
