If mildly athletic people came over they'd absolutely whiff on the first twenty pitches. But if they could make it through that embarrassment, they'd start fouling them off. By about the 35th pitch (end of first bucket), they'd start making decent contact and some start hitting line drives within ten more. I myself am pretty consistent in there.
But there you're able to nail the timing. One offspeed pitch and you're back to absolute whiffs. And don't get me started on mixing in curveballs. The highest level talent is recognizing the pitch coming at you in thousandths of a second.
