What's your budget? Can you charge an EV at home/work?
I absolutely love my Tesla as a commuter car, and there are very cheap options now.
While I would probably get a different brand EV if I did it again today, there are a lot of very affordable EVs in the used and new market.
If you cannot charge your EV at home/work. I would get a Hyundai Elantra, car handles well and is very cheap maintenance. I liked it. Consumer Reports has given them a lot of love lately too.
If you are not looking for a sedan, don't ask me. I have preferences, but I rarely drive other types of vehicles since I was 19.
