New England in late summer/early fall is still incredible. Spend time in Boston, go to the Cape or Martha's Vineyard
Go up to Maine and see the puffins, have a lobster roll or clams on the beach, etc.
So much to do in New England and really, the only time that isn't fun to be there is winter (which may last from December to June, but that's a different story).

Went to UMASS game at Patriot's stadium a few years ago. It was cold but a lot of fun. I'd go again.
