From the employer’s perspective, those office chit-chats and long lunches with
colleagues are not completely devoid of value, and certainly add more value than employees spending that time changing diapers and playing video games.

That doesn’t mean an employee has to enjoy that stuff or sign up for a job that requires them to go to the office. But these conversations are sometimes only from the perspective of the self-interested employee, as if there isn’t another party with a stake in these arrangements.
