The Farm All-American
Early in our married life many years ago our Branch President owned a 48-unit
apartment complex. It was kind of low end and a lower income area. He asked us if we wanted to manage it for him. The kicker for us was we get a free apartment and free utilities. We thought the perfect means by which to save for a house down payment. We did accomplish that goal, but a year and a half of collecting rent or trying to collect rent from 48 low-income tenants was a nightmare. Evictions, lies, destroyed apartments, cleaning huge messes, lots of maintenance issues, were a few of our challenges. One tenant was upset and wiped poop all over the walls, another apartment we entered had wall to wall roaches, people would rent furniture and leave without, paying for rent and furniture, I'm sure there were drugs around, but I didn't notice much. We survived it all with 2 small kids while I also had a real job, and bought our first home after about 19 months. I'm glad I did it then, but I wouldn't do it now.
