My FIL owns some routes. Revenue growth was crazy up through early COVID.
In some ways it is like a business in a box with Fed Ex being your main customer. A lot depends on whether you think e-commerce is going to continue to grow at a high rate.

Main problems with the business are:

1) You are basically at the will of Fedex (think of it as a franchise). They can take away your routes if they don’t like you and can also change your rates. And if they do something stupid and lose a big customer, that hurts your business. Also, FedEx is constantly changing their requirements for their trucks, which can be painful and expensive to comply with.

2) Drivers are flaky. Lots of HR headaches and you should expect that you are gonna need to jump in a truck and take over routes from time to time.

3) Holidays are very busy and may disrupt family time.

I was thinking of doing the same thing a few years back, but ultimately decided not to. FWIW, my FIL and his business partner recommended doing linehaul over P&D.
