The way my sister explained it was more of a convenience than anything. You drop a kid off for practice, to play at a friends house, etc. Then when they are ready to be picked up they can easily call you and let you know. I recognize that they could do that with an adult's phone but watches can be pretty cheap and the service is like $5 per month.
