Pretty telling that Jake is getting almost universal praise outside CB. I think the waters here have been just too muddied by 2023 for 2024 Jake to get a fair shot in CB public perception.
Too many have taken up the past time of watching BYU offense with the primary purpose of looking for their next negative post. We are going to confirm our bias no matter what.
I'd rather not watch that way. Jake isn't perfect but I think he's still young as a D1 quarterback. In community college, he could just run around and sling the ball wherever. That obviously doesn't work at this level, and he's figuring that out. He's got talent, and I think he's going to get better.
I don't want to miss out on celebrating over 350 yards of offense, 3 touchdowns, and just 1 interception on the way to doubling up on the spread in a 20-pt win so I can preserve my frustration over a poor goalline decision a year ago.
BYU is 3-0 in nonconference play and looking like the improved team we hoped they could be. Same record but vastly different performance (As someone pointed out on Twitter +617 yardage differential in 2024 compared to -20 at this time last year). Huge credit to the defense, but Retzlaff has played his part as well. I think he's better than what Slovis showed us to start 2023.
