When John Beck beat TCU at TCU, Curtis Brown made a living off of those plays.
I remember thinking at the time that Curtis didn't get enough credit for the win. He took multiple passes on 3rd down beyond the sticks to move the chains.

I also remember an interview with Steve Young once when he talked about this with regard to the West Coast Offense and 49ers. He basically said that you just have to trust the system and the players - sometimes the WR/RB is going to take that pass and get the 1st down. Sometimes they aren't. But you can't necessarily expect to score every single drive - so you follow the game plan, which includes some of those passes on 3rd down that are short of the yard-to-gain marker.
