BYUFootballRocks1 Playmaker
NO EXCUSES on offense - reflections on Friday night - Austin Collie to OC Aaron Roderick:

1. Wasn't Austin Collie amazing on the postgame? He spoke directly to our OC and nailed it. Here's a guy that worked in and witnessed offensive strategy at the highest level - on an NFL team, as a star receiver who went to a Super Bowl.
And what did Austin say on BYUTV about what he witnessed Saturday? (Coaches, please listen up...)

"The one thing that I would love to see from Aaron Roderick and the staff is instead of game planning for the strategy that you think is going to beat the [other] team, let's identify who our playmakers are and say:
'How are we going to get these guys the ball?!'
They obviously have the knack for making the big play, they're going to pull us out of these types of slumps, so like if I'm Aaron I'm saying:
'Chase Roberts!' - he's one of our guys. How do we highlight him?...How do we [get him in the picture]?
Darius [Lassiter], Chase, the tight ends - you've got to identify who your guys are...
Currently what we're doing right now, it ain't working. It didn't work in the past. We can't just plug guys in [to a scheme] and think it's gonna work.
Right now, we are BYU...you do have playmakers, so let's make sure we kinda outline a game plan that's going to highlight these guys and make sure they're getting the ball and making the difference in the games."

2. During Spring ball the offensive coordinator went before the cameras and talked about how this offense is intended to be like the traditional, dominating passing offenses of many decades and has laid none of that aside: long downfield passes, mid-range mastery, using the tight-ends and backs running out of the backfield to catch significant downfield passes, etc.
Then what did we get Saturday, when we got smacked in the mouth just a bit? Turnovers, dumb, complicated lateral plays when we don't have the super-speed to pull them off, telegraphed inside runs, dink and dunk, etc. Almost total frustration...

3. If your halfbacks and fullbacks are in short supply, adjust! Use your superstars downfield! Use the pass to open up the run - the reverse of what we're doing. Do something significant...

My prediction is that if BYU's offense doesn't flip this script to air-explosive immediately, at Wyoming and during our first Big12 game with Kansas State at home on the 21st, then we're going to go down the same rat hole as last year: great defense, poor-to-mediocre offense, bad year.

And quite frankly as a fan, if we do that, if we continue the deer-in-the-headlights look on offense, don't expect my money to be put forth...
