the ball to him, Jennings was standing at his own 32 yard line on top of the "3" that marks the 30 yard line. His WR was directly on BYU's 30 yard line standing on the outside of the "30" on the opposite side of the field. That's roughly a 45 degree angle. Doing the math, the QB and WR were roughly 54 yards apart at that moment in time.
To keep separation from Evan (who was 2 yards behind the WR when Jennings starts his throwing motion), Jennings would have needed to keep leading his WR down the field with the throw. A 55 yard throw would not have done it. A 55 yard throw would have been something that Evan could have either intercepted or batted down (hopefully batted down). It would have needed to have been a 60-70 yard throw for the WR to have maintained separation. A 60-70 yard throw to what was then the QB's weak side trying to throw back across the field.
Evan saw that the ball wasn't coming close to him nor his WR and slowed down as he could start celebrating at that point. That then became the 7 yard separation that you saw.
