Some of the ego in the NBA, etc. is culled by the fact that the players are under multi-year contracts and cannot bolt after one year. There is also a ceiling of potential money by the time you hit the NBA. Most teams are not willing to take the 12th guy on an NBA bench and offer him more than he's currently getting.
