Early 50s, 12 months ago he was diagnosed with what his doctor called “raging diabetes”; his blood sugar levels were sky high & he had lost a ton of weight, seemingly without trying. His doctor told him that he’d never seen a case like his where it went that long undiagnosed. By the time he saw his doctor he was struggling to pee, had advanced ED, and random bruising on his arms.
Within a few months however he seemed to have it mostly under control. His A1C has been at prediabetes levels for 3-6 months now, and it’s been at least that long since he even tested his blood sugar.
At the same time he’s dealing with worsening numbness in his feet and lower legs. It’s to the point where sitting down & standing up, putting on shoes & socks, & getting in & out of his car is really painful. His feet & lower legs go completely numb when he goes swimming & he wears compression socks in bed (also to avoid numbness).
His doctor said that some leftover numbness is expected while returning to low blood sugar levels, but to have increasing neuropathy at this stage is rare, & he thinks there may be another cause other than diabetes. This morning he had some ultrasound scanning on his legs & feet, while the doctor told him his foot pulse is strong.
Is this solely the result of his diabetes? Or based on this and other symptoms (e.g. ED, bruising, rapid improvement, etc) could this be related to something else entirely?
