You keep bringing up Judge’s defense, which is not the reference here. There might be an argument that playing average to below average defense at a prime position is more valuable than not playing defense (I’m not really sure), but I’m not making it.

The argument is that guys like Francisco Lindor, who are objectively worse hitters than Ohtani, make up a lot of that ground on defense. Judge is so far ahead of Ohtani as a hitter this season that that comparison isn’t worth talking about.

Bobby Witt Jr on the other hand is having an elite season. Hitting similarly to Ohtani and providing defensive value at shortstop.
