Don't stay downtown. It is relatively dead after work hours, not nearly as many restaurant and entertainment
options, and is (a little) further away than River North. There are a lot of fun neighborhoods as well, but for a first-timer I would say River North.
Ignore the people who say suburbs. The city is awesome and you will just add a ton of commute time from the suburbs.
