Good for you. I would have put it down but I am a cynical old coot who refuses
to accept that animals should be treated like a human member of the family.
Admittedly, I have never faced a situation where that choice needed to be made so I can easily claim to be cold hearted with respect to spending a lot of money on animals and there is no evidence to the contrary.
You probably made the right choice for your situation.
