BYU did win the next year dramatically and the next several, but that game changed Utah's belief in their ability to beat BYU. I was sitting in the student section. It was bizarre to watch a game Utah was totally dominating, up several scores well into the 4th quarter and all the Ute fans around me were still talking about how BYU just need 3... 4... TDs to win the game. Up 4 TDs well into the 4th and literally no one around me in the student section believed they would win.
I was back for the game 6 years later at Utah and the turnaround in Ute belief was on full display. We were sitting on those splintered benches in the north endzone randomly near a Ute fan friend. Early in the 2nd half of a game BYU had the lead almost the entire game. Even though BYU had won like 14 of the previous 16 games our someone near us says something like... if Utah scores 2 TDs and BYU scores 1 TD we'll have another 34-31 Utah win. Yep... that happened.
Those games were also back when it sure looked like Ute players were intentionally injuring BYU players. Seemingly, obviously intentional, dramatic injuries to BYU players. Similar to what others claim happens more recently vs. USU.
