Bohanon musings
Criddle reported something yesterday that honestly blew my mind: Gerry Bohanon had never received professional QB coaching before in his life until this past off-season with John Beck and 3DQB.

Here’s a guy who was a 91 grade 4-star recruit in the class of 2018 (with 16 offers from schools such as Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Tennessee), who was rated as the #8 dual threat QB recruit in the entire country that year.

Here’s a guy who eventually became QB1 for a power conference champion, who was second in the Big 12 in total TD’s with 27 in 2021… who eventually transferred to USF where a rebuilding program was intent on building around him… and he had never received professional QB coaching until now as a 24 year old grad transfer senior?

In a day and age where most D1 QB’s have been training with QB coaches since they were in elementary school, here’s a QB who had elevated himself to the tops of college football recruiting and to the tops of Big 12 football without any of that.

When one digs into Gerry’s upbringing it all makes more sense. He is from a tiny town in rural Arkansas. His hometown of Earle has a population of 1,831 people and sits in Crittendon county, population of just 48,163 on the Tennessee border. It is a very humble community with a median household income of just $30,109. There aren’t any professional QB coaches in Earle, Arkansas.

Gerry is a young man from incredibly humble beginnings, blessed with so much God Given natural talent that college recruiters had to take notice. Perhaps now we understand the drive within him, that would push him to come back from a devastating shoulder injury and fight his way to contending once again for a Big 12 quarterback job. He’s a self-made man, and now he finally received some professional off-season coaching on his craft for the first time in his life… and he’s healthy. Throwing the ball better than he ever has with his improved, professionally coached mechanics. Driving the ball from his base for the first time ever.

All of this leaves me wondering… could we see G-Bo have a career year this season? Could we all be witnesses that see him rise from the ashes and finally realize his full potential? It would make for one of the greatest stories in BYU football history if that happened. What a story that would be. I for one, am rooting for that.
