RE: The early recruiting success of Kevin Young doesn't bode well for Kalani
It’s not just recruiting success. It’s been a master class that starts with an identity and a vision for your program.

That identity and vision was laughable to anyone who knew what type of program BYU had traditionally been and what heights a successor to Mark Pope might dare to reach for.

But KY didn’t care or maybe even know what BYU was supposed to be. He envisioned it to be a place where kids with NBA talent could come and get a jump start on their professional careers. Crazy talk right. Especially in the context of the NIL era that we live in and the type of money that BYu traditionally had and the number of players who have left BYU basketball and Succeed in the NBA.

But KY had an identity for BYU Basketball he had a vision for it. In order to reach the identity and vision he needed to start with the right coaching staff and structure.

Traditional BYU money was not going to achieve that. So what did KY do? He took his identity and his vision and he sold that to the people deciding if he was going to be the next coach of BYU Basketball.

And as he sold the vision and told them what it was going to take to achieve it, the powers that be actually believed in him enough to pay him what he required. The donors who were approached with his identity and vision believed in him, and he has gone about his business, making his identity and his vision a reality.

It’s been a Masterclass Folks. We’ve had a front row seat to seeing what head coach with the right identity and the right vision and the right character and the right skills can do. He can turn a program 180° in 60 days. Never seen anything like it in sports. I don’t even know what to compare it to.

This is why Kalani in trouble or at least why he should be in trouble

He doesn’t have the right identity and he doesn’t have the vision nor the right tools And he hasn’t had the right staff to be able to reach that vision, And he hasn’t been able to lead the staff that he’s had to achieve success.

I hate to be rude, but he can’t even get the guys in the right shoes During sloppy field conditions in a game…not in warm-ups, not in the first quarter & not even at halftime.

He is very good though at saying that he is going to go back and look at the tape and fix things, but the problem is that it just doesn’t happen. Either he doesn’t know what’s wrong or he does know, but he doesn’t know how to fix it.
