Here's what SouthWest really decided.
SouthWest decided that they were missing out on the $10-$15 per seat that the other airlines charge as a convenience fee - or whatever - if you want to pick your seat instead of just taking whatever seat is assigned.

Over the course of a year - that's a lot of cash to miss out on. And everybody - including the discount airlines - except for them has been getting it.
