On thebother hand, they were sometimes paid by the word and sometimes
published in installments. So some were incentives to drag it out.
Crime and Punishment, for example, IIRC, was published in installments. I temember thinking it read that way — slow, slow, slow, then it would get interesting at the end of a section. Had to keep people coming back for the next part.
