The last time BYU signed a four-star level QB out of HS was 2012- Tanner Mangum
In fact, the last time we signed a player better than a mid-three star rating was 2012. We got lucky with both Zach Wilson (86 rated mid-three star player) and Jaren Hall (84 rated mid-three star), but when you go back to 2012 there were a LOT of other QB's signed by BYU that were two or three star players that did not pan out at all. BYU used to routinely sign high-level QB's out of HS, but that has really not been as much the case the last 10-15 years.

Just to use the 2024 class as an example, we did get commitments from Lugo and Watson, who are both 85 rated players who will hopefully turn out to be decent players. However, there were seven more highly rated QB's that we offered who went elsewhere. Sometimes those lower rated players turn out well, but on average, the schools that get the higher rated players are getting better talent.
