I remember about 12 years ago when my shoulder specialist(supposedly the best in
Utah), “guaranteed” me that my shoulder would be “stronger than ever” if he did my partially torn labrum surgery for me. I was in my early 30’s.

He said I would be able to “lift heavier” and “throw farther and faster” than ever in my life. (I was always in above average shape simply from just always having to be moving and doing things) and could always throw really far. Accuracy was a whole other thing.

Anyways, my labrum had been partially torn for years. I still remember the moment I did it while doing too much weight on the free weight military press. Almost a decade of it being partially torn didn’t affect me really at all EXCEPT stability wise when doing over head lifts. I just had to be extra careful, and not push the weight.

Well I decided I finally was gonna get it fixed, I had dreams of becoming an Adonis. And this surgeon convinced me it was gonna happen if I got the surgery done. I had never had any type of surgery before, or had any serious injury or medical issues.

Well… the surgery supposedly went perfect. I religiously followed the post operative instructions, recovery, and then physical therapy… and I have never been able to come even close to where I was with a partially torn labrum pre surgery. Cant throw the ball half as far or fast as I could pre surgery. Cant lift as much, but it is more stable.

Sucks. But I don’t and never did hold any grudge against the surgeon. Im sure he did his best.

But anytime I hear a similar thing was told to a friend or family member. I always think of my experience. And anytime I have friend or family member as my opinion or advice on if they should get any sortve “repair” surgery, but especially shoulder, I always tell them about my experience, and share that based on my results, something would have to be extremely injured, basically no function at all, in order for me to ever get that type of “elective” repair surgery ever again on anything on my body.
