Its crazy simple... you almost have to force them to crash.
My tips...

1) Set your return-to-home height higher than default. I think the default is like 20 meters (65 feet), i set mine to 150 - 200 feet just to make sure it can clear any trees, hills, mountains, bears... etc.

2) related to #1... The drone's height shown is based on its original location. If you take off at 4000 ft asl and climb to 100ft.. then fly over a gradual hill you will not be 100ft off the ground (you could be 30 feet off the ground). If I take off from my backyard and fly up the hill behind my house, I will get the 300ft warning when i'm just at tree top level. (you can turn off that warning btw).

3) Until you get comfortable... just fly in open areas at a high height. The drone will refuse to fly lower than .5 meters (1.5 feet). Watch videos on how to set up the controller & app display. 99.9% of the time I'm flying by the map and video on the screen (breaking the rule you should always have visual on the drone 🙂 ).

4) Buy the insurance. DJI Care is cheap (it's like $60 for the mini 3). Knowing you have some basic insurance removes some of the fear. If you are afraid to fly you will not get the most out of your Mini 3.

5) Buy an ND filter and learn how to take GOOD video. Your shutter speed needs to be double your framerate (shooting 60fps? your shutter speed needs to be 1/120). In daylight, you will need a filter over the lens to block some of the light to lower your shutter speed... A neutral density (ND) filter. If you don't do that, you'll never get the amazing cinematic video these drones can create (everything will always look like a soap opera 🙂 ).

Fly it from your backyard, take it to the park, take it everywhere with you. Once you realize how easy they are to control (it's not even really flying... more like "fly that direction") you can start working on your video skills.
