Actually for an IRREVOCABLE trust, the threshold is lower - about $14 million
for a married couple and $7 million for a single person.

The credit shelter amount/unified credit/whatever you want to call it is currently on the books at $5 million. It's inflation adjusted, so that $5M has been adjusted over time to $6,805,000. Trump's tax bill temporarily doubled that amount through 2025, so it's currently at $13,610,000 for a single person and $27.2 million for a married couple. That number is going to fall back to it's non-doubled amount after Dec 31, 2025, which, when you account for anticipated inflation, will be around $7 million per person.

Basically if you're single and have a net worth of more than $7 million, or if you're married and have a net worth of more than $14 million, you have the rest of 2024 and all of 2025 to take advantage of some lifetime gifts (often to an irrevocable trust) to shelter an extra $7M or $14M from estate taxes.
