This. A 4-ton A/C unit will draw a little more than 20 amps at 240 volts while
running. The issue is the start up. The locked rotor amps (what the amperage can reach the instant the rotor is energized) is 130. His generator tops out at 40 amps, with a running amperage of 33. He needs another 90 amps available to kick start the compressor.


Now, a hard start kit, what you're thinking of, is basically adding a secondary capacitor to help kick start the compressor. It will significantly reduce the required amp draw, but not likely to get below 40.
