Funny thing is BYU's '84, '96, and '01 teams paved the way for both Utah to be
in the BCS as well as for the BCS being the way to decide the champion. That said, even with the old system that Utah team would have had a very difficult time getting the top spot in the rankings. Going undefeated in '07 (such a crazy year) might have given a similar result to '84.
