This is my guess. Pope was somewhat abrasive on top of not being a BYU guy
Pope was pretty open about having larger ambitions, everyone knew he'd bolt for the first bluebood that came calling. I could see it being a tough sell for the donors to dump major resources into the program just so Pope could turn around and leverage that success for a job elsewhere.
