That's an interesting argument.
They are different subspecies. That's not the same as being the same species is it? If further studies were done, (it wouldn't shock me if humans have created new subspecies of domesticated canids.) To say that "dogs and wolves can reproduce" is a very broad statement. Wolves can also reproduce with Coyotes. Dingos and dogs can reproduce as well. So can zebras and donkeys. They are all separate subspecies.
