That changes.
This idea that the HC is only between an individual and his bishop is just not correct. There’s no reason to have an enforceable honor code if the school isn’t involved.
BYU is not the church. BYU is a church sponsored school that offers a product. That product is a top notch education in an LDS cultural environment with requisite enforceable standards.
You can quibble about where lines are drawn but to pretend that all of this is just “personal issues” that BYU has no stake in is plain wrong.
BD put himself in a tough position. He put his GF and child in a tough position. He put BYU in a tough position.
Some private choices have public consequences. That’s not BYUs fault. BYU has 30k students and many millions more alumni and members and fans that have a stake in BYU that includes everything from education, athletics, culture, and branding.
BYU is not wrong for enforcing an honor code. They don’t always do it right. What happened with BD was devastating and embarrassing for a lot of reasons. That doesn’t mean BYU’s ultimate decision to suspend him was wrong.
All the best for BD and the people involved. I wish we could just move on but as long as there’s an audience for this stuff it will continue.
