I've come to realize that some people have turned the electric car...
Decision into a moral one. Their media and Facebook friends have convince them it is an evil thing. I don't get it at all, but the best I can do to understand is that they believe:

1) we are destroying the American economy and jobs by choosing electric over gas, because it's a worse energy source and we've been tricked into thinking global warming is real, and we will suffer economically for abandoning gas.

2) the lithium mine in Africa thing: you are supporting the torture and essentially slave labor of small children working in lithium mines when you buy electric cars.

3) we are sacrificing our freedom because the Democrats are passing laws to force us to buy electric cars, and they are morally opposed to the government telling them what they should do, and they think that the cars are strictly worse than gas powered cars (more expensive for less quality) and that gas powered cars would have no chance of it weren't for subsidies and marketing convincing us that we are destroying the earth.

Put all of that together, and it becomes not an issue of "what kind of car do you personally like to drive" but "if you buy an electric car you are a bad, stupid person who supports something harmful and are a sheep who believes what the Democrats are telling you".

I brought up that I might buy an electric car to a guy and he basically launched into a speech as to why he would never buy electric, and I realized that something runs a lot deeper here than just "I don't like what's different or new".

It's a strange phenomenon.
