A few things: We have changed the definition of needs. Housing/land has become

more expensive as there is less available. Healthcare and education have gotten better, but have gotten more expensive at a much higher rate than the progress. These last two are partly (or even largely) to blame on systems that incentivize the wrong things and/or self-inflate due to a lack of transparency.
There are lots of other problems, but these four make a huge difference.
