byukarl Intervention Needed
Oh it's pretty obvious we don't use the TE's as much
Anyone denying it this morning just because they are a little upset that Holker is transferring need to understand that either Roderick or Jaren are purposely not targeting the TE's as often as previous QBs. Someone said Jaren threw over the middle a bunch last year, so I guess I won't argue in that regard, but this year I've not witnessed that many medium level over the middle throws to anyone. He usually goes wide or short to the sideline or downfield. There was that one beautiful over the middle pass to the TE against Oregon, but that's it.

So the question is are these TE's getting open in games? And I can say just watching Saturday that Holker or Rex was wide open on one play from scrimmage and had made separation with the LBers and was breaking wide open down the middle but Jaren just moved right past that read and instead went wide. So I'm not sure if it's a coaching issue or a Jaren issue but the reality remains that the TE is not a integral point now in the offense. If the offense scores often I really don't care if the TE is in the game or not but when they take away the downfield or WR's then you have to have a good safety outlet and most of the great teams have a great TE that can catch the ball.

Anyway, wish Holker good luck. I don't think he should sniff the field again this year (I'm not that aware of the transfer rules in a situation like this one), but I do think those making the claim that we're not using the TE enough are probably correct, but is it really the fault of the coaches and more of just Jaren's preference.
