Comparing the All-Time BYU NFL team to current NFL teams

See Previous post for all-time 53 man roster from BYU players

Quarterback: Kansas City Chiefs
Notes: Steve Young compares favorably to any QB in the NFL.  Mahomes or Rodgers would be the best comp, but Mahomes has a bit more mobility so we're going with him.  We're also lucky enough to have a better backup in McMahon, but it's unlikely he sees the field, so Chiefs is the comp.  This is clearly a best-in-the-league type of position group for us.

Running Back:Arizona Cardinals or New York Jets
Notes: Tempting to say the Lions since they actually have Jamaal Williams, but he's the clear #2 there and the clear #1 for us.  Better comparisons might be the Cardinals, who have a pass-catching back that can actually carry the ball surprisingly well (Edmonds) and a somewhat heavier hitter (Conner).  Alternatively, could be the Jets, with Michael Carter as the Allgeier role (recently drafted mid-round rookie) and Tevin Coleman as Jamaal Williams (not a great fit since Coleman has suffered so much from injuries).  This position group falls well below average among current NFL teams, but not at the very bottom.

Wide Receiver: Detroit Lions
Notes: The Lions have likely the worst WR situation in the NFL, so they're the match.  Collie at his best matches Amon-Ra St Brown and then Richards and Koslowski are Khalif Raymond and Quintez Cephus.  Thought about the Jets where we could match Collie to Berrios as the slot option, but Richards and Kozlowski lack the explosiveness of Moore and Davis.  Remember that Dax Milne is our WR4, where he's more of a WR6 or 7 for Washington Football Team, so this is definitely a weakness and might well be worse than any current NFL team.

Tight End: New England Patriots
Notes: There's really no great match (whether now or historically) for a team with 4 excellent tight-ends and a do-everything type that is listed at TE for convenience.  The closest is the Patriots with two great pass-catchers in Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith.  Also worth noting that those two, just like the BYU group, are pass-catching TEs first - though Mili is a pretty good run-blocker and Christensen started as a FB - any weaknesses here are nitpicking.  Similarly, neither Henry or Smith are bad blockers, it's just not where they make their name.  There's zero doubt this is the strongest BYU position group and would clearly be better than any NFL team.

Offensive Line: Philadelphia Eagles
Notes: This is a strong group, but maybe not as strong as we think.  (Bart) Oates is the only Pro Bowler, Tait was a very good long-term starter, as was Gravelle.  (Brad) Oates and Paul Howard were starters for a few seasons, but not long-term guys.  Eagles are a great comp with an All-Pro center (Kelce), very good tackles (Mailata and Johnson) and serviceable guards (Dickerson and Herbig).  It's absolutely a strength for the team, but not a historically dominant unit.  Somewhat above league average.

Defensive Line: Las Vegas Raiders
Notes: Another area where we make up for lack of top-end talent with depth.  This group only has 2 Pro Bowl nods (1 for Keisel, 1 for Ziggy Ansah) for defensive line play (J Denney has two as a long-snapper). That said, a match is REALLY hard to find.  Here we've got two solid NT (Hankins and Solomon Thomas for the Raiders; Hoke and Ehin for the BYU team) and good depth pass-rushers with quality but not any true elite options (Maxx Crosby, Clelin Ferrel, Yannick Naganoue, Carl Nassib for the Raiders; Keisel, Ansah, Hall, Denney for the BYU team).  Not a perfect match and our depth is better, but best I could find.  We're probably a league average position group here, maybe slightly above, especially considering the versatility and depth.

Linebackers: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Notes: This might honestly be a bit generous, but Warner and Van Noy are SO good and the Bucs Jason-Pierre Paul isn't now what he once was.  In any case, the Bucs have two great pass-rushers on the outside in Jason-Pierre Paul and Shaq Barrett so that outside is a match, and the BYU team is probably even slightly better!  At the inside, Poppinga and Goiuvea, while very good, likely can't realistically match Devin White and Lavonte David.  Given the lack of 3-4 teams, this is likely the best comparison, but we're going to be hurting a bit in pass coverage (in comparison to the Bucs' elite group wrt that).  This group profiles as a best-in-the-league type position group.

Cornerbacks/Safeties: Washington Football Team
Notes: Like our team WFT has two quality starting QBs (Kendall Fuller and William Jackson III for WFT; Dick Felt and Michael Davis for BYU) but beyond that they're in huge trouble at the nickle spot.  They've also got adequate starters at safety, but nothing to write home about - Kamren Curl and the current version of Landon Collins who is nothing like his name value would suggest after struggling with injuries.  This is a subpar position group that would hurt us, but probably not among the very worst in the league - thanks goodness for the development of Michael Davis here or we'd be in a world of hurt.

Bottom line: We've got good, not great, offensive and defensive lines.  Great linebackers, TE and QB.  Subpar to abysmal RB, DB, WR.  This is definitely a playoff team, but not likely a Super Bowl favorite - not in the modern era with so much focus on the pass game. With a FA signing or two or a trade it'd be MUCH better, and I'm sure fans would be complaining about the gaping holes at WR and DB while carrying McMahon and Pitta and others, arguing we should trade from strengths to fill those holes.
