The linked article above, but the man can write. Both him and Dick in my opinion are gifted writers, although I do not agree with Gordon’s takes all the time.
For example, I disagreed with the tone of his story criticizing Elder Holland, but it made for an interesting read. And led me to watch that speech to BYU’s faculty, which didn’t seem hardly as controversial as Gordon made it out to be. The gist of the speech seemed to be to encourage the Family Science department to not shy away from performing research on hot button topics. I get Gordon’s points about not using phrases that could trigger certain groups, but I also think it’s okay to extend a little grace to Elder Holland, when he obviously cares deeply about persons in such groups as children of God.
Merits of the article aside, I think it’s easy to imagine someone at KSL or elsewhere were offended on Elder Holland’s behalf by Gordon’s article, and say “not at my station.” I’m not saying this happened, like I said I’ve never watched Gordon’s show and have no idea if it just was not great. But I don’t think what Gordon is suggesting or believes may have happened is so far fetched (although we’ll probably never know). Hopefully he’s not bitter about what may have happened and can keep on keeping on.
