My parents both believed divorce was NOT an option. After years and years of neglecting the relationship, divorce suddenly became an option and quickly happened.

I'm sure your Stake Pres means well, and there may be specific reasons why that's the right council in your stake. But, generally, I think it's very good for couples to realize that if they don't work at their marriage, divorce is the likely result. My wife and I have taken that approach and I think it has very much helped us.
